The Banker Magazine has ranked Zenith Bank Plc as the number one tier-1 bank in Nigeria, maintaining the position for the 13th straight year.

In its 2022 Top 1000 World Banks Ranking, the journal said Zenith Bank boasts a Tier-1 capital of $2.75 billion, emerging as the 460th bank globally.

The ranking, which was published in the July 2022 edition of The Banker Magazine of the Financial Times Group, United Kingdom, was based on the 2021 year-end Tier-1 capital of banks globally.

Tier-1 Capital describes capital adequacy, which is the core measure of a bank’s financial strength from a regulator’s point of view. According to the ranking, Tier-1 Capital, as defined by the latest Bank for International Settlements (BIS) guidelines, includes loss-absorbing capital, i.e. common stock, disclosed reserves, retained earnings and minority interests in the equity of subsidiaries that are less than wholly owned.

Zenith Bank’s financial performance for the year was underpinned by double-digit growth of 10 per cent in gross earnings, with an improved market share in both retail and corporate sectors despite a very challenging macroeconomic environment aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reacting to the development, the Group Managing Director/CEO of Zenith Bank, Mr Ebenezer Onyeagwu, said: “This ranking is a testament to our resilience and doggedness as an institution despite economic headwinds and a persistent challenging macroeconomic environment.”

“Indeed, being ranked as the Number One Bank in Nigeria by Tier-1 Capital for the 13th year in a row underscores our commitment to sustaining the superior performance we are renowned for and creating value for our highly esteemed customers,” he added.

The banker expressed his appreciation to the founder and Chairman of Zenith Bank, Mr Jim Ovia, for his guidance and for laying the foundation and building the structures of an enduring and very successful institution; the board for the outstanding leadership they provide; the staff, whose drive and commitment sustains the exceptional performance; and the bank’s customers for their unflinching loyalty to the Zenith brand.

Over 300 girls will participate in the 2022 edition of the annual Leadership, Empowerment, Achievement and Development (LEAD) Camp for girls organised by Junior Achievement Nigeria (JAN) in partnership with Union Bank of Nigeria Plc.

The week-long event, which commences today, Monday, July 25, 2022, is designed to empower young girls to be high-achieving leaders in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal – Gender Equality.

Union Bank, which has been supporting the programme for eight years, said it aligns with its corporate sustainability impact strategy.

“Union Bank is pleased to extend our long-standing partnership with Junior Achievement Nigeria for their LEAD Camp.

“As a bank, we are committed to enabling success for the communities we serve and this partnership reinforces our commitment to the push for gender equality and our focus on supporting the girl child.

“We are proud to see the impact of the programme on the young girls across the country and we commend the efforts of the JAN team who work tirelessly to impact them,” the Chief Brand and Marketing Officer of Union Bank, Ms Ogochukwu Ekezie-Ekaidem, said.

On her part, the Executive Director of JAN, Ms Foluso Gbadamosi, stated that “The Junior Achievement Nigeria LEAD Camp is a transforming experience for girls.

“Having top women from different organisations impact our girls is not only inspiring but reassuring and a clear indication that young girls can aspire to be all they were created to be.

“Regardless of the career path they choose to take, they can be successful with the right guidance, mindset, skill sets and networks – this is what this program offers.

“We appreciate Union Bank for their continuous support in partnering with us for the LEAD Camp and we look forward to more years of inspiring girls and enabling a world of possibilities for them to thrive excellently.”

It was gathered that this year’s edition, which is the 21st anniversary, is the first time the camp will be held in a hybrid mode, with the participants to be taken through activities like leadership workshops, empowerment/panel sessions covering: financial literacy, entrepreneurship, technology, creative arts and entertainment, and development sessions such as coding, understanding sexual abuse, and personal hygiene with leading women from the private and public sectors in Nigeria and project group mentors.

Business account holders with Ecobank Nigeria Limited can now receive funds sent through Ecobank Rapidtransfer or any of its remittance franchise partners through the Business to Business (B2B), Business to Customer (B2C) and Customers to Business (C2B) transaction types directly into their business accounts.

The financial institution confirmed this development in a statement issued on Monday, noting that the extension of the innovative remittance services to the account category is to create a more robust remittance offering as efforts are being made to enlist other International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs).

The Head of Consumer Banking at Ecobank, Mrs Korede Demola–Adeniyi, explained that the action was in line with the bank’s strategy to provide accessible remittance services to Nigerians, listing the various channels through which these remittances can be accessed as the Rapidtransfer app, Ecobank Mobile App, Ecobank Online, and any of the bank branches.

She said the service affords business owners in Nigeria to receive monies sent by both individuals and corporate organisations anywhere in the world instantly to their Ecobank domiciliary accounts, stating that the bank has put in place seamless account opening procedures for those who do not have domiciliary accounts for them to enjoy the service.

“For us as a bank, we are excited about these and other future collaborations as our contributions to driving remittance inflows into the country, promoting trade and foreign direct investments, creating businesses, spurring entrepreneurship, and generally developing the Nigerian economy.

“Some of the benefits for business account holders include no limits to how much they can receive, no hidden charges and there is also the opportunity to invest the funds received in foreign currency at a competitive rate,” she said

“The Rapidtransfer is our proprietary product. It is licensed by the nation’s apex bank; the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as an international money transfer product and it is also licensed in Europe. Diaspora remittances can be sent from anywhere in the world using the Rapidtransfer app – available for download in the Google Play and iOS stores,” Mrs Demola–Adeniyi added.
