The report also details that electronic commerce to through cards totaled more than US$6.3 billion, of which US$3.1 billion were through debit cards.“In recent years, there has been a significant decrease in the use of active credit cards, which went from approximately 9 million in 2017 to US$5.7 million at the end of 2021. Last year and with most sectors reactivated, credit began to regain strength.At the end of the year, US$ 3.2 billion were moved in online purchases through credit cards”, said Helmut Cáceda Salazar, executive president of Capece.The use of digital wallets as a payment method accelerated during 2020 and continues to experience explosive growth.It is currently the third payment method that transacts the most in electronic commerce, moving more than 2 billion.For example, platforms like Yape would have 8.5 million users in 2021.Meanwhile, platforms such as PagoEfectivo or SafetyPay continue to grow.This means of payment moved US$730 million in the country during 2021.“Ecommerce continues to grow, and in 2021 the same trend has continued.In general, there has been an increase of more than 55% driven by purchases through digital wallets.Although this shows accelerated growth, there is still a long way to go to achieve the democratization of electronic commerce in companies in the interior of the country”, said Cáceda Salazar.At the end of 2021, approximately 13.9 million people bought online, which represents 41.8% of Peruvians, according to data compiled by Capece.Thus, last year e-commerce grew 55% versus 2020, moving around US$9.3 billion.This trend has been driven by the use of digital wallets.“Before the pandemic (2019) only 18.6% of Peruvians (6 million) bought online.With the impact of covid-19, this has accelerated.What we see in the province, unlike other years, online buyers are increasing.Currently 30% of online buyers are from the provinces, although their purchase frequency is much lower than in the capital”, said Helmut Cáceda, president of Capece.
